Flights to Latvia
Latvia, located in Eastern Europe, is one of three Baltic States. With a wide coast along the Baltic Sea, Latvia is also surrounded by Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, and Belarus. Once part of the Soviet Iron Curtain, Latvia gained independence in 1991 and joined the European Union in 2004 opening the country up for tourism.
Riga, the capital of Latvia, is her most visited city. It has been named a World Heritage Site because of its rich history. Founded in 1201 by the Germans, Riga is now over 800 years old. The old town of Riga is exceptional. There are examples of ancient Germanic architecture and at St. Peter’s church their world famous grand organ is on display. Unique walking tours, Eat Riga, leave daily from St. Peter’s. Old wooden houses can be found in the Maskavas Forstate district.
A surburb of Riga, Jurmala is one of Latvia’s most popular holiday destinations. It is the largest resort town on the Baltic. Jurmala has many hotels and beautiful beaches. Many festivals are celebrated here in the summer such as the Fisherman’s Festival and the Jomas Fish Festival. There is also a large water park in Jurmala, Livu Akvaparks.
Outside the capital, forests cover fifty percent of the land. There are many nature trails, parks, and lakes across Latvia, with small villages interspersed throughout. Several are worth noting. Liepaja is known as the city of music. Located near Liepaja, Karosta is a former secret military town and has become a popular stop for tourist and scholars. The area hosts a huge summer festival- the Baltic Beach Bash.
Latvia’s second most admired city is Sigulda, 100 km from Riga. A beautiful and ancient city, Sigulda is home to many castles and significant places. This charming town is known as the Switzerland of the East. Winter sports such as snowboarding and skiing are big in the area.
Dining is a wonderful experience in Latvia. You will find varied menus with many local delicacies such as eel, smoked cheese, kot letes which are meatballs, and kiselis or stewed fruit. Fresh fruit is plentiful in season and you will find lots of wild strawberries and blueberries. Beer is popular in Latvia. Local brands to try are Aldaris and Livu. Also look for Riga Black Balsam. This is an herbal liqueur claimed to improve health. Latvians add a few teaspoons to coffee or tea.
Travel throughout Latvia is efficient. Trains connect all the cities and towns. When in Riga or other large cities you may count on trams, trolleys, and taxis. Be aware that trams and trolleys require an advance purchased ticket.
Riga International is Latvia’s largest airport. Most visitors arrive and depart from here. Europeans are not required to have a visa for entry. You will find one taxi service operates from the airport. Look for a red cab to carry you into Riga for the start of your memorable holiday.
